NAGERCOIL/MADURAI: Four NGOs in Kanyakumari and Thoothukudi districts, whose accounts have been frozen by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) for alleged diversion of funds, denied they had used them for any purpose other than intended. The NGOs confirmed that officials inspected their accounts a couple of weeks ago and that their bank accounts have been frozen now, but they said they had not received any communication stating the reason for the action. Likewise, highly-placed sources in the CB-CID said they had not received any direction from the MHA to file cases against any NGO. Two of the NGOs, Tuticorin Diocese Association and Tuticorin Multipurpose Social Service Society, are run by the Thoothukudi Roman Catholic diocese with Bishop Yuvan Ambrose as head.Another organisation, Good Vision Charitable Trust, run by the political wing convenor of People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE), Mano Thangaraj, had just `2,732 in its account with the Syndicate Bank’s Karungal branch, which has now been frozen.Thangaraj told Express the NGO was launched in 2005 for relief work for victims of the 2004 tsunami, and all financial transactions were closed on March 2, 2010, after its role as ‘implementing partner’ for donor agencies was completed.“We received no money for any project after that and we did not spend any money for any purpose after March, 2010. Everything is on record,” he said and added that he saw a malafide intention behind the freezing of the bank account. “This is nothing but a way of terrorising leaders of the anti-KKNPP movement,” he said. Thangaraj now plans to file a revision petition with the ministry before challenging the decision legally. The fourth NGO, Rural Uplift Centre (RUC) in Nagercoil, has already filed a revision petition.
