The Karnataka High Court on Friday set aside a Single Bench order directing Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) to conduct supplementary examinations for nearly 30,000 BE students who could not join the third semester after failing in more than four subjects in the first two semesters.
A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Vikramajit Sen and Justice B V Nagarathna passed the order after hearing an appeal filed by the VTU challenging the September 3 order directing the university to notify exams within a week.
Justice Sen said holding special examinations at the university level was not possible for such a large chunk of candidates. Most of the students who had applied for special exams were facing attendance shortage, and there was no justification for running short of attendance, he said. “They are wasting national resources by not attending classes. We can’t amend a good law to implement bad laws,” he said.
Justice Sen also said: “Over 30,000 students failing (in exams) is distressing, and it is indeed an alarming percentage of failure in an engineering degree. The VTU should initiate measures to uplift the level of education,” he said.
The court asked the state government and the AICTE to provided better facilities and infrastructure in colleges. The Bench also cautioned students not to fall prey to peer pressure or join technical courses just to please parents.
“Parents should also check whether their children have interest in technical courses before pushing them forward,” it added. Notice to Centre on Wind Power The Karnataka High Court on Friday ordered issuance of notice to Union of India, Ministry for New and Renewable energy, State government, The Karnataka Renewable Energy Development and others following a PIL petition filed by Cauvery Janma Bhoomi Trust for not giving connection to Wind power unit to stop the use of forest in Bhagamandala of Madikere taluk in Kodagu District.
Hearing the petition, a Division Bench headed by Chief Justice Vikramjit Sen ordered notice and adjourned the case for further hearing. Notice on Manual Scavenger Death The High Cour on Friday ordered issuance of emergent notice to the state, Urban Development Department and others following a petition filed by a manual scavenger’s wife seeking compensation.
During the hearing, the petitioner Anjali, wife of Rugu, stated that her husband died after he cleaned the drainage in a boys hostel in Chitradurga on January 25 last year. Hearing the petition, Justice Ram Mohan Reddy directed the Chitradurga city Municipal Council to grant compensation and adjourned the petition.
