New Delhi: It's Lohri and the north, particularly the Punjab, is gearing up for the harvest festival that marks the beginning of the harvest season and the end of winter. Bonfires will be lit up at most places this evening to mark the festival. The night of Lohri is believed to be the longest night of the year.
Lohri comes a day before Makar Sankranti. Celebrated in particular by the Punjabi community, people on this day remember Dulha Bhatti - a famous legendary hero who helped the poor by robbing the rich.
Lohri celebrations can never be complete without snacking on peanuts, gajak, rewri and til and the sale of these is soaring.
In the evening, prayers are offered to Lord Agni to shower his blessings on the land for abundance of crops and prosperity.
Fun-filled festivities are observed for a good harvest that carries cultural and traditional significance.
