New Delhi: Temperatures in Delhi climbed a little giving some respite to the Delhiites even as rest of North India continued to battle with severe cold conditions. Uttar Pradesh remained worst affected with 23 more people succumbing to the winter chill, raising the state's death toll to 249.
Delhi's minimum was a slightly better at four degrees Celsius, but UP capital Lucknow still shivered at a cold 0.7 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile in the East, Tripura and adjoining areas braved their coldest night in 18 years on Thursday, with minimum temperatures dropping to 3.6 degrees Celsius.
The cold has brought life to a standstill in Tripura with poor attendance in schools and offices. According to the Meteorological Department, the unusual cold was caused by cold northern winds.
Srinagar recorded a temperature of 0.3 degrees Celsius, warmer than its previous minus 5.5 degrees Celsius while Kolkata fell to nine degrees Celsius - its coldest day in over a century.
