New Delhi: A day ahead of the winter session of the Parliament, the Opposition has recalibrated its position and shifted the goalpost to corner the government on demonetisation of high value currency.
The main Opposition party, Congress has said that it will seek a probe on what it alleges is selective leak of the decision to favour a chosen few.
After the all-party meet hosted by the government, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad said the principal Opposition party in Parliament is not seeking a rollback of the decision.
Instead, the Congress will now target government on the faulty implementation of the move aimed at wiping out black money from the system, while underscoring its support for the move aimed at weeding out unaccounted wealth in the market.
This appears to be an extension of the line taken by the CPM on Monday. Many political parties including the Left have given a notice for the suspension of the question hour in both houses of Parliament to discuss the issue
The crystallisation of the political positions of various opposition parties came after a meeting of floor leaders in Parliament. It was felt that a joint march of the opposition MPs to President’s House should be resorted to much later. Any move of this kind on the first day of the session itself would be high on optics but would leave very little for the Opposition to take the matter forward on the floor of the House.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee who arrived in Delhi Tuesday afternoon has already sought an appointment with Rashtrapati Bhawan. She had a meeting with AAP leader and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal later in the evening. It now appears that Kejriwal joining the Mamata-led march is still not confirmed. Even SP and BSP do not appear to be too eager to join ranks with the TMC.
The only shot in the arm for the TMC as it attempts to take a pole position on the issue has been the support extended by the NDA ally Shiv Sena. Now a junior partner of the BJP in Maharashtra, Sena has had strained ties with the BJP for a while now, with the two allies jostling for space ahead of civic polls in Sena bastion Mumbai. Also Read: Shiv Sena Terms Situation Arising Out of Demonetisation as "Financial Anarchy"
Government, on the other hand, is likely to rely on two factors in defending its position: what BJP feels is low probity quotient in a section of the Opposition, and linking government measures on demonetisation to larger attempt to weed out political corruption. Also Read: PM Modi Discusses the Possibility of State Funding of Elections
