HYDERABAD: Telugu Desam, CPM and CPI organised protests in the state capital on Thursday against the steep increase in petrol price effected by the central government.TDP activists led by former mayor Teegala Krishna Reddy went in a procession from NTR Ghat to the Tank Bund, and dumped a motorcycle in Hussainsagar lake as a mark of protest. CPM activists led by its state secretary BV Raghavulu conducted a cycle rally and burnt the UPA government at the Centre in effigy at RTC Crossroads.CPI activists staged a dharna at Narayanaguda Crossroads.Addressing the crowds at their respective venues of protest, the opposition leaders apprehended an increase in the diesel and LPG prices also within a few days. The petrol price hike would have an impact on the byelections in the state and the people would teach the Congress a lesson, they said. In a novel protest, students of Osmania University tied ropes to the cars of their professors and pulled them from the Arts College to the Law College on the campus. Some other dragged their bikes. About 100 students participated in the protest. As the police barricaded the road leading to Tarnaka, the protesters changed course and went in the opposite direction. The protest was peaceful. “All political leaders, who are provided convoys, should not be supplied with petrol free of cost by the central and state governments, and should be asked to buy petrol with their own money. This will make them understand the burden and pain of the common man,” said M. Krishank, OUJAC spokesman. The hike in petrol price would lead to inflation burdening the common man further, he added.“We will continue stir against the Centre as it has always been apathetic to the problems of people,” declared Bhaskar, president, OUJAC.
