New York: Leander Paes and his Czech partner Martin Damm entered the semi-finals of the men's doubles event at the US Open with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 win over the Czech-Russian pair of Leos Friedl and Mikhail Youzhny in the quarter-finals here.
The sixth seeds will now take on the fourth seeded Australian-Zimbabwean pair of Paul Hanley and Kevin Ullyett after coming through the close to two-hour long match.
The Indo-Czech pair started off rustily but their experience came to their rescue against the unheralded duo and despite committing as many as six double faults and wasting two break points, Paes and Damm managed to win the opener in 45 minutes.
The second set, however, saw the unseeded Czech-Russian pair turn the tables on Paes and Damm with a gritty comeback. The Indo-Czech duo were broken twice in the set and committed two double faults as they lost the plot and conceded the second.
The comeback, however, did not last long and Paes and Damm routed the Indo-Czech duo in the decider to seal the issue in their favour. The sixth seeds held their serve, broke their rivals twice and hit 27 winners to stamp their authority and enter the last four of the last Grandslam of the year.
