Washington: Pakistan and Afghanistan have made it to the top ten list of failed countries compiled by the US Foreign Policy magazine and the US-based Fund for Peace.
Pakistan moved from a position of 34 last year to 9 in the recent report, above even Afghanistan which is at number 10.
Afghanistan’s situation has also gone for worse from previous year when the country was at number 11.
The reasons sited for Pakistan’s decline are the country’s inability to police the tribal areas near the Afghan border, the devastating earthquake in Kashmir last October and rising ethnic tensions.
The entire list consists of 146 countries ranked according to their viability. The good news for India is that it is ranked at 93, below China, which is at number 57.
In fact, according to the report India is one country, which has pulled back from the brink, nullifying the predictions of the 1970s analysts who had seen dire consequences in India as a result of population growth, economic mismanagement, poverty and corruption.
Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bhutan are ranked at numbers 19, 20, 25 and 39 respectively.
The top three positions are occupied by Sudan, DR Congo and Ivory Coast while Iraq and Zimbabwe are ranked 4th and 5th respectively.
The evaluation was done on the basis of twelve factors that included mounting demographic pressures and widespread violation of human rights.
