Lahore: Pakistan's opposition and religious parties have welcomed the US administration's decision to withhold $ 800 million in military aid to the country, describing it a "god-sent opportunity" to emerge from the "financial enslavement" of Americans.
Senior PML-N leader Muhammad Mehdi said though the Pakistani military has not yet confirmed the suspension of American aid, his party is against any assistance that comes with conditions.
"The US step is going to add to the mistrust between the two countries although the Pakistan Army has already refused to accept a major chunk of the aid in the form of weapons and ammunition, while $ 300 million from the Coalition Support Fund is long overdue for the services the Pakistan Army is rendering on the Afghan border," he said.
To overcome the situation, he said, Pakistani authorities need to redraw the regional policy.
Political forces and the military establishment should be on the same page while framing the policy, unlike in the past, as Pakistan is still suffering from the divergent views of political parties and the establishment on the Afghan policy in 1986, he added.
