HYDERABAD: While most localities are celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi with great fervour, Venkateswaranagar Colony, a tiny locality at Road No 14, Banjara Hills wore a deserted look.The residents had decided not to celebrate the festival after one of their own, Vinod Kumar was killed in an accident at Dhoolpet on Wednesday.Vinod Kumar was crushed to death under wheels of a crane while it was lifting Ganesh idols.He and six others had gone to Gangabowli to buy a Ganesh idol.They had already purchased a 10-feet Ganesh idol for Rs. 30,000 and Vinod was standing in front of the idol shop when the mishap happened.He is survived by his wife Lakshmi and two children, Durga Bhavani and Murali.“Vinod wanted to take his family for shopping on the occasion of Ganesh festival.But the festival turned out to be a nightmare for them,” said Shyam, a close associate of Vinod Kumar.He added they had decided not to celebrate Ganesh festival in remembrance of the man who had started the festival in the locality 30 years ago.“Every year we celebrate Ganesh festival with great fervour in our locality.Vinod Kumar had set up the first idol which was bought at Rs. 200, 30 years ago.However, with his tragic demise on Wednesday, the Ambedkar Youth Association has taken a decision not to celebrate Vinayaka Chaturthi,’’ he added.The association had collected Rs. 48,000 for celebrating the festival.But it was decided to provide the amount as financial assistance for the family of the deceased.“The amount will be given to his family,’’ the association members said.
