CHENNAI: Robbers who tried to attack three people in St Thomas mount were overpowered by passers-by and the police on Friday. Karthik of Korukkupet, Baskar and Ansar, both from Tondiarpet, were caught by a police team with the help of the public. The gang first attempted to snatch the mobile phone of Ganapathy of Andal Nagar who was walking home after getting off a train at St Thomas Mount. Ganapathy retaliated, but was attacked with a knife. When he shouted for help, some people came to his rescue. But the gang fled to nearby Asarkhana where they attempted to break the lock of a parked motorcycle.When Nijammuddin of Alandur questioned them, they attacked him with the knife and fled the scene.In their third attempt, they attacked a beggar at the Asarkhana bus stand. Meanwhile, people alerted St Thomas Mount Police Station about the phone snatching attempt. Police traced the gang to Asarkhana bus stand where the public caught the three when they tried to attack the begger.Police said Baskar had been charged with murdering his father’s killer while Karthik, was involved in many cases registered at Marina Police Station and Ansar was involved in cases at Tondiarpet.
