MADURAI: Four months after the Dalits of Uthapuram entered Muthalamman temple, the HC Bench directed the Madurai district administration to initiate more efforts to restore normalcy in the village that was bastion of caste discrimination until a few months ago. In an order passed on Tuesday, Justice K Chandru directed the district administration to pay compensation to the Dalits, who were assaulted on October 1, 2008, as a sequel to the demolition of the untouchability wall.Stating that the offenses committed against the Dalits come under the Prevention of Atrocities against the SC and ST Act, the Judge asked the administration to pay compensation in accordance with the notification issued by the Centre in Dec  2011.Based on the recommendations of Madurai SP Asra Garg, the Judge also instructed the administration to send recommendations to the State government to issue orders for withdrawal of criminal complaints filed by the Dalits and caste Hindus against each other.Disposing a batch of writ petitions filed by Dalits, Justice Chandru assured them that the  administration would take steps to ensure peace and implement all the demands raised by both sides in an agreement signed in October 2011.
