New Delhi: Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Friday gave an assurance of a "fair and impartial" probe by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) into the Volcker findings on the Iraqi oil pay-offs.
"You are welcome to believe, what you want to believe," Chidambaram said on whether the ED was doing a cover up operation for the government or not.
"It is a presumptuous question which has no basis at all," he added.
Chidambaram also denied reports that he has received a copy of the interim report of ED on its probe on the Volcker findings.
Asked whether the Justice R S Pathak Inquiry Authority would look into allegations made by Congress party and various other quarters on the Volcker issue, Chidambaram said, "Please look at the terms of reference. I think, term number three and the last term are comprehensive enough".
"If any request comes from Justice Pathak (for widening the terms of reference) certainly we will give due weight".
But given the Indian experience with inquiry commissions and the fact that right now the Central Bureau of Investigation is struggling with findings of two such commissions ? the Jain Commission which probed Rajiv Gandhi?s assassination and the Phukan Commission which went into the Tehelka deals ? the Volcker probe may end up in an endless diplomatic paper chase.
