KOCHI: With just a week to D-day, people in the Piravom constituency have begun to feel the election heat as all major political parties intensified their efforts to garner maximum votes. The star campaigners of the LDF, UDF and the BJP toured across the constituency seeking votes for their respective candidates. Accompanied by P Rajeev MP, LDF candidate M J Jacob toured Thiruvankulam and Irumpanam on Saturday. The campaign passed through Kuzhikattuvayal, Laksham Veedu, Hill Palace, Karingachira Changamputha and Parakadavu. As usual, his stress was on developmental issues. He explained to the voters how he succeeded in bringing about the renovation of Hill Palace. He stressed that he had worked tirelessly to tackle the drinking water shortage in the area, and claimed that he could solve the issue to a great extent. Former ministers MA Baby and S Sarma campaigned at Mulanthuruthy and Thuruthikkara. Though MJ Jacob did not mention the resignation of Neyyaattinkara MLA R Selvaraj during his campaigns, other senior CPM leaders had no such qualms. They blamed the UDF for the situation and alleged that ‘the UDF had resorted to ‘horse-trading’.Meanwhile, UDF candidate Anoop Jacob campaigned at Koothattukulam. Though Chief Minister Oommen Chandy was in Piravom in the morning, he left for Kottayam later. While K Babu campaigned at Mulamthuruthy, former KPCC president K Muraleedharan wooed voters at Edakkattuvayal. Taking a break from the routine campaign strategies, Youth Congress activists held a bike rally from Irumpanam to Koothattukulam. Led by party’s young MLAs, Hibi Eden, P C Vishnunath, Shafi Parambil and minister P K Jayalakshmi, the rally passed through the entire length of the constituency covering major points along the Kariganchira- Koothattukulam stretch. The BJP too enhanced its efforts to win the maiden assembly seat in the state. Party state general secretary A N Radhakrishnan visited the families of the children who were killed in the accident involving the vehicle of police officers at Vettickal. The candidate K R Rajagopal toured in Thirumaradi and Amballoor panchayats. He also visited Kakkoor, Valiyappadom, Manimalakunnu, Oliyappuram and Vadakara, publicising the party agenda.Rajagopal told the voters that both the UDF and the LDF were not concerned with the problems faced by the general public. He said both the fronts did nothing to address the basic infrastructure needs in the constituency.
