MALKANGIRI: With just two days to go for filing of nominations for the three-tier panchayat polls, from January 7, the political parties are yet to announce their candidates. The three major parties _ Congress, BJP and BJD _ have not yet come out with the selection list as the leaders are busy finding deserving candidates. The delay, it is believed, is due to the fact that the panchayat elections are being viewed as a prelude to the next Assembly polls. Hectic parleys are on to put up the best candidates who can hold the base and ensure a win for the party.During the five-phase polls, about 3,51,475 voters will elect 15 zilla parishad members, 108 sarpanches and an equal number of panchayat samiti members and 1,319 ward members, District Panchayat Office sources said. Of the 15 ZP members across seven blocks, two are unreserved (one woman) and nine have been reserved for Scheduled Tribe (six women) followed by three for Scheduled Caste (two women) and one for OBC woman. Similarly, all the 108 sarpanch posts have been reserved for ST candidates, including 54 women. Of the total 108 samiti members, seven are reserved for OBCs, followed by 65 for STs and 22 for SCs. The rest are unreserved. Of the 1,319 ward members, 117 are reserved for OBCs followed by 692 for ST, 224 for SC and the remaining are unreserved. As many as 1,913 polling booths would be set up in Malkangiri and Chitrakonda Assembly constituencies of which 1,189 have been identified as sensitive and 130 hypersensitive. Election for 30 panchayats under ZP Zone No-1 comprising Kalimela, Khairput, Mathili and Kudmulgumma will be held in the first phase on February 11. This will be followed by 22 panchayats in the second phase on February 13, 20 GPs in the third phase on February 15, 25 in the fourth phase on February 17 and the final phase election on February 19.
