KOCHI: The decades-old wait for potable water by the residents of Vypeen Island and Kadamakudy Panchayat is set to end soon as the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) is in the process of completing projects worth `56-crore and `26.24-crore for the areas respectively. The project in Vypeen involves the construction of overhead tanks at Murikkumpadom (Zone I), Malippuram (Zone II) and Njarakkal (Zone III) with a capacity of 11.8, 13.8 and 17.9 lakh litres respectively. Officials with the KWA said that the project will benefit not only the residents of Vypeen Island but also those in some parts of Fort Kochi.Currently, drinking water to Vypeen is pumped from Vaduthala to Puthuvype. From there, water is supplied to either side of Puthuvype on alternate days at specific intervals. With the completion of this project, Vypeenites, especially those in the Elamkunnappuzha, Njarakkal and Nayarambalam areas, can avail uninterrupted water supply. “The pipe-laying work in Zone I is almost over and the construction of the tank will begin soon. However, partial pumping can begin in the Murikkumpadom area by mid-May, through the pipeline via pumping main and the supply can be connected to the tank once it is constructed. The Malippuram tank is nearing completion and piling has begun for the Njarakkal tank. We hope that the project will be completed by the end of this year or early next year,” said M Shamsudeen, Executive Engineer, Project Division, KWA.The `26.2-crore project to ensure a water supply of 4.5 Million Litres per Day (MLD) in the Kadamakudy Panchayat has been undertaken jointly by the KWA and Goshree Islands Development Authority (GIDA). “The project involves various aspects including the construction of a new treatment plant and laying of pipelines. A new pump will also be installed in the existing pump house in Eloorkkara. This will be linked to the 4.5 MLD-capacity treatment plant which is coming up near the old plant at Muppathadom. The construction of the plant will be completed within 18 months. New pipeline will be laid from Muppathadom to Kongorpilly, Kongorpilly to Puthanpally and from there to the existing sump at Pizhala. The tendering process is underway for the first two stretches of the pipeline and we have given the order for the HDP pipelines required for the third stretch, which is 3550-metres long,” said Shamsudeen. “Three upcoming overhead tanks at Pizhala, Palianthuruth and Varapuzha will be connected to the sump. The estimate for the construction of the tanks is currently awaiting sanction,” he added.
