New Delhi: Veteran Parliamentarian and Union Minister for Power Paddanath Mohd Sayeed died of a cardiac arrest in a hospital in Seoul, South Korea, on Sunday.
Sayeed had been visiting South Korea for medical treatment. He died at the Hyundai Hospital where he had been undergoing treatment for enlargement of liver and symptoms of malignancy.
This was Sayeed's third visit to Seoul in the last two months for medical treatment.
Syed was 64. He is survived by his wife A B Rahmath Sayeed, a son and seven daughters.
Sayeed was the longest serving Member of Parliament. Sayeed was elected to Lok Sabha from Lakshadweep a record number of 10 times. He was the youngest member of the Lok Sabha when he was elected for the first time in 1967.
He won the elections in 1971, 1977, 1980, 1984, 1989, 1991, 1996, 1998 and 1999. He lost to young Janata Dal(U) MP, Muthu Koya, in the last General Elections.
Sayeed also served as the Deputy Speaker of the 13th Lok Sabha in 1999 and remained in the post till the House was dissolved in 2004. He was given the power portfolio after Congress return to power in May last year.
A staunch Gandhi family loyalist, Sayeed was a prominent face in the Congress party. His rise, from ranks to ministerial posts at the Centre, has been dramatic.
Born on May 10, 1941, at Androth island in Lakshadweep, Sayeed graduated with a B Com degree from Government Art College, Mangalore. He went on to study law in Mumbai and was a lawyer by profession.
