The protests against the United States over the anti-Islamic movie threw traffic out of gear for about two hours on arterial Anna Salai, Peters Road and Cathedral Road on Friday.
Police sources said that there was no permission to hold a demonstration at the Peters Road-Mount Road Junction and that there was an alert issued by the Intelligence Section of the city police about the protest. Since 4 pm, traffic from Peters Road-Anna Salai junction towards DMS was completely disrupted after members of the Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam gathered there in large numbers.
Similarly, there was a pile up of vehicles when those coming from Cathedral Road and turning on to Anna Salai ran into the traffic from the opposite lane that was diverted. Around 5.30 pm, the barricade at Whites Road Junction was removed, but traffic returned to normal only around 6 pm. The regular peak hour traffic added to the woes. Additional Commissioner (traffic) Sanjay Arora was seen regulating traffic at Peters Road Junction.
