Moga, Punjab: Farmer unions on Monday launched a five-day agitation in 12 district headquarters in Punjab to protest against alleged anti-farmer policies of the Centre and the state government.
Farmers and members of Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) divisions -- Ekta, Ugrahan and Punjab Khet Mazdoor Union on Monday staged demonstrations in front of 12 district headquarters, mostly in the Malwa region of the state.
The agitation was against the alleged anti-farmer policies of the Punjab and the Union governments. The agitators called for steps to check the increasing number of suicides by farmers and labourers.
Joginder Singh Ugrahan, President of BKU (Ekta) and Sukhdev Singh Kokari, General Secretary of BKU (Ugrahan), said that the farmers are demanding a waiver of crop loans and introduction of the Money Laundering Act in Punjab.
They also expressed support for the ex-servicemen's demand for the implementation of the One Rank One Pension (OROP) scheme.
The protests were held at, among other places, Moga, Barnala, Bathinda, Mansa and Sangrur and were said to have been by and large peaceful.
