ALUVA: PWD has decided to expedite the construction of the drain, which was demolished illegally at the instigation of few councillors of Aluva Municipality a couple of months ago. It will be finished by December. The controversy over the illegal demolition of a PWD drainage on the side of Bridge Road has finally been settled. Without the consent of PWD officials, the drain was demolished on June 2 for the smooth flow of waste and rain water. This damaged the pipelines, telephone, Internet and KSEB connections and prevented access to a major hospital and various shops. The hospital staff, patients and merchants had protested against the action. The municipal authorities claimed that the drainage was opened to remove the silt which caused overflow of water during monsoon. Later it was found that they could not spend municipal funds for the construction. The government instructed PWD officials to take up the reconstruction without raising serious legal objections. But it has to observe certain mandatory proceedings before beginning  the work. The drainage should be 2.5 meters deep and 1.5 meters wide running along 100 meters on the southern side of the Bridge Road. Slabs will be laid to be used as foot-path.  An estimate amounting to Rs 25 lakhs  has been made construction. “Work order has been  issued and it is expected to complete by December, but the contractor has not yet executed the agreement,” T I Jose, engineer.
