KOCHI: A foreign language interpreter for the Police Department! No longer can it be dubbed a quixotic idea of the sleuths. There are many fake local doctors who claim to have studied in China and produce certificates in Chinese. But the police cannot check the veracity as there are few in the city who know the language. In an interesting case, the investigation into quack doctors practising in a private hospital in Mattanchery has hit a roadblock as the police are not able to verify the certificates in Chinese for want of a language expert. The police landed in trouble after five doctors from a private hospital were asked to produce their certificates. There are only one or two Chinese interpreters in the city making it hard for the police to investigate the case.“First we have to confirm whether these certificates are original and if they are pass certificates. We are looking for a Chinese interpreter but there is hardly anyone we could get to read the language for us,” a police official said.“There are many doctors who did their medical education in China. But we cannot confirm that they have studied in accredited medical institutions, now that medical education in China has become more popular and cheaper,” he said. The case came to light after the arrest of a quack Rajasree of Malappuram from the hospital. During interrogation, she admitted that there were more quacks without proper certificates practising in the same hospital. When the police inquired about it with the hospital management they said they had several doctors who had their medical degree from China.
