TIRUNELVELI/HOSUR/TIRUCHY: Widespread and moderate rains lashed Tirunelveli and other parts of the district on Monday, giving respite from the scorching heat. The consecutive failure of the Southwest monsoon has only added to the people’s woes. Moreover, the dwindling water level in dams had also become a cause for concern for the authorities, as sufficient water could not be supplied for the Kar paddy cultivation. The moderate rain that began by Monday evening lasted for a few hours bringing much cheer among the residents.Though the rain stopped within a few hours, the sky remained overcast, signalling the possibility of further rain in the district.Heavy rains that began around 3.30 pm in Hosur, continued throughout the evening in many parts of the industrial town.Candidates on door-to-door campaigns for the local body polls were much affected as they could not walk down on the flooded streets. Tiruchy city had a short spell of rain on Sunday evening, after a hot day. The regular traffic and normal life was not affected since it was at midnight. While, the rain water immediately drained in most of the roads, a few places remained inundated, forewarning about the situation to be expected, when the north-east monsoon sets in. The city’s major market area, the Gandhi market, was unable to cope with this brief spell and turned muddy.
