CHENNAI: If the torrential downpour left you numb and fuming on Saturday, there is more bad news. Expect a re-run on Sunday as a depression in the Bay of Bengal has intensified, according to the Met office. There goes your weekend revelry; but what is the fun in getting stuck at traffic jams for ages? Stay at home if you don’t have a pressing engagement, the weather gods seem to say. For the record, the city received 3 cm precipitation (3.9 cm at Nungambakkam and 2.1 cm at Meenambakkam observatory).Between Friday and Saturday morning, Uthiramerur in Kancheepuram district received the State’s highest rainfall of 20 cm. For the second successive day, fishermen in south Tamil Nadu were advised not to venture into the sea. Many areas and arterial roads, such as Thirumalai Pillai Road, Sterling Road, Nungambakkam High Road, Vepery High Road, T Nagar, Ekkaduthangal; Ram Nagar, Sadasivam Nagar, Kuber Nagar, Lakshmi Nagar in Madipakkam, Alandur and Velachery, two-wheelers had a tough time negotiating pot-holed roads. “In Adambakkam, the City link road was a sheet of water and completely unmotorable. The alternative route to Guindy through Cart Track Road was also flooded,” groaned a resident of Adambakkam.“Travelling from Nandanam, I had to pass through Chevalier Sivaji Ganesan Salai, where local residents had opened a manhole lid to let the slush in quickly. But as I wasn’t aware, I nearly tripped there,” recalled Santhosh, who works with a finance company in Nandanam and travels by a two-wheeler. The situation was worse in North Chennai, where overnight torrential rains suspended traffic flow through Ganesapuram subway near Vyasarpadi Jeeva railway station and at Ennore. While motorists and MTC buses coming from Madhavaram, Erukanchery and other northern parts into city and vice versa were rerouted via Perambur Flyover and also via Basin Bridge route at Vyasarpadi, traffic was totally suspended along the coastal road near Ernavur as heavy tides caused extensive damage to the road.Besides, there were reports of heavy waterlogging in Vyasarpadi, Kodungaiyur, Erukanchery, MKB Nagar, Washermenpet, Manali, Sekkadu, Manali New Town, Mathur, Madhavaram, Ennore, Kathivakkam, Thiruvotriyur, Kolathur, T V K Nagar and Korrukupet.Moderate to heavy rain could be expected in many areas of the State on Sunday, according to Dr S R Ramanan, regional meteorological director.
