New Delhi: Star rapper, Yo Yo Honey Singh is the latest celebrity after actor Akshay Kumar to buy a team in the World Kabbadi League which is scheduled to be held in five different countries from August to December this year.
"I like action-based sports and kabbadi is my favourite. I wanted to be associated with a sport on which I really believe in and so I bought a team in World Kabbadi League and Toronto will host my team," Singh, who had also started Global Fighting Championship (GFC) in Dubai, told reporters here on Friday.
"I have been involved in it for the last one and half months and I think it is truly global. I have named it on my name, 'Yo Yo Tigers' and I am really excited to see it on screen when it is covered in Sony Six," he added.
The Punjab-born rapper, who made it big in Bollywood with his foot-tapping party numbers, is already busy in composing the title track for his team.
"I have already planned to roll out my next title in support of my team. It will be another peppy number which will also encourage the fans of my team," said Honey Singh, who has ruled the chartbusters with songs like 'Angreji Beat', 'High Heels' and 'Dope Shope'.
A personal venture headed by Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, World Kabaddi League will follow the format of Formula One and will be played across four continents in countries such as UK, USA, Canada, UAE and India, starting August 9 at London.
Ten international teams, comprising top 250 kabbadi players, will play 94 matches over five months in double round robin format.
"My team will start in October. It is a global event with Brazilian and Mexican players also included in the teams and my aim is to take it to other cities in India like Gujarat and Bangalore," said Honey Singh, who is also a trained martial arts and boxing enthusiast.
Earlier this month, Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar also endorsed the League by buying a team.
Interestingly, actor Abhishek Bachchan had acquired the Jaipur franchise of Pro-Kabaddi, another professional kabaddi league. His team is called Jaipur Pink Panthers.
Founder and former CEO of UTV Group Ronnie Screwvala also bought a team in the league, i.e the Mumbai franchise. The eight-team Pro-Kabaddi will start from July 26.
