Amid complaints that some beneficiaries of National Food Security Scheme have not got their cards in Uttarakhand, Chief Minister Harish Rawat on Tuesday asked officials to ensure their proper distribution and see that food items reach families identified under the scheme.

"No family covered under the plan should stay deprived of its benefits. Officials overseeing implementation of the scheme must ensure that food items reach the families," Rawat said reviewing the progress of the scheme in the state.

On complaints of cards not reaching a few beneficiaries in the state, he said card allocation work should be carried out on a priority basis under the supervision of District Magistrates (DM) who should ensure their timely distribution. Making it clear that no negligence in this regard would be tolerated, he said a block-wise schedule should be drafted and sent to all DMs asking them to facilitate distribution of the cards within a set timeframe.

He also ordered daily monitoring of the plan at the secretary level for its "satisfactory implementation". The DM, CDO and ADM were given directions to hold camps and ensure distribution of cards, especially in urban areas.

The CM has asked the ministers in charge to check the implementation of the programme. He has also asked them to make a plan to take godowns on rent from local people which will help the government set up food banks in villages and backward areas of the state.

The national food security scheme was launched in Uttarakhand on July 1. A population of 61.94 lakh stands to benefit from the programme. The families identified under the scheme in the state are provided 3 kg of rice at Rs 3 and 2 kg of wheat at Rs 2.
