ROURKELA: It is was a frightening sight as the swelling Brahmani river engulfed the vast residential areas along its banks. Trapped, the people waited for the rain to relent before being rescued.
Around 3,000 trained personnel changed the scenario within few hours on Saturday as they evacuated more than 8000 people.Giving a new dimension to disaster mitigation efforts, the personnel of the State police, SOG, CRPF, Orissa State Disaster Management Authority and Orissa Disaster Rapid Action Force evacuated flood victims from the most affected areas of Balughat, Dandiapali, Panposhbasti and Deogaon on the outskirts of Rourkela, through a systematic approach. Around 50 students of the Sai Valley School stranded near the Sankh bridge were immediately brought to safety.

Former Rourkela municipality chairman Narendra Tripathy said the flood was unprecedented for Rourekla and the rescue operation, swift and very effective.
