BANGALORE: Researchers from the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) in association with Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases (RGICD), are working towards determining the cause of the death of H1N1 patients across the state.Speaking to Express Dr V Ravi, Professor and Head of Neurovirology, NIMHANS, said, “We have started working on the nature of the virus, severity of type of responses by the patients.We want to study how can the same virus affect different people in different ways.While some of the severely affected, some are moderately affected and mostly others are mildly affected.” “Microbiologist from Manipal Hospitals will also be roped in to conduct the study.While the throat swabs would be from Manipal Hospitals and RGICD, we have to check the number of confirmed cases.Depending on the positive H1N1 cases, the study would be proceeded”, added Dr Ravi.Dr Shashidhar Buggi, director, RGICD said that while the throat swabs and two blood samples are regularly being sent to NIMHANS for testing and study purpose, the patients undergoing treatment for H1N1 will be clinically examined and analysed for the study purpose at RGICD.“The study aims to focus on the cause of mortality, cause leading to the death”, he added.Meanwhile the institute has reported to received 14 confirmed cases of H1N1 this year till date
