PUDUCHERRY: Former Chief Minister V Vaithilingam and Puducherry Pradesh Congress president A V Subramanian on Sunday urged the government to revoke the suspension of two police personnel over an alleged custodial death in Yanam.They also wanted Regional Executive Officer P Jawahar, who ordered their suspension, to be removed from the post.According to sources, following the death of a youth at the Yanam police station a few days ago, Jawahar suspended inspector Sivaganesan and Sub-inspector Suresh Babu.The youth, Devu Sakthi Babu, was reportedly summoned to the police station for an inquiry in connection with a theft case.Devu’s relatives, who alleged that his death was a result of police torture, refused to accept his body following a post-mortem. Devu reportedly had many cases registered against him.Vaithilingam has charged that the REO acted as per the orders of the ruling party by suspending the police officials. Claiming that it was not a ‘lock-up death’, the former CM said that Devu went to the police station after consuming poison following a quarrel with his wife. Earlier, the same REO ordered the arrest of Yanam MLA Malladi Krishna Rao, who led an agitation for fishermen protesting the laying of a gas pipeline by a Gujarat-based oil firm in the area, Vaithilingam said. The action against police officials was fuelled by pressure from the ruling party, he charged.Step-motherly TreatmentThe former Chief Minister said that a step-motherly attitude was being shown to the police department, which was not allowed to function freely.Further, the allowances for election duty were not distributed to the police personnel, he said, adding that the police department was being neglected by the AINRC government led by N Rangasamy.Yanam MLA on Indefinite FastCongress MLA Malladi Krishna Rao began an indefinite fast against the suspension of two police officials over an alleged custodial death, at Yanam on Sunday. The Yanam MLA wanted their suspensions revoked.
