Reliance Jio Infocomm (RJI) initially requested for allocation of numbers in October last year for testing phone calls over 4G network in Delhi, Mumbai and Jamnagar.

New Delhi: Reliance Jio Infocomm, the telecom arm of Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries, is about to get six months extension for testing phone call services on 4G network, according to sources.

"Telecom Minister (Kapil Sibal) has approved extension for testing voice calls on its 4G network. They were allocated 10,000 numbers for testing services for which the permit was to expire on July 16," sources told PTI.

Separately, a telecom ministry official said: "We are supporting companies to work on technology and provide better options to customers. They requested for extension and we have agreed."

Reliance Jio Infocomm (RJI) initially requested for allocation of numbers in October last year for testing phone calls over 4G network in Delhi, Mumbai and Jamnagar. The numbers were allocated to it in April this year.

It is the only company to have 20 Megahertz of pan-India airwaves for providing wireless broadband services.

RJI, formerly Infotel Broadband Services, said it has developed new Voice Over LTE technology that would be able to connect call seamlessly across existing 2G, 3G, NLD (national long distance) and ILD (international long distance) networks.

The company is registered as a Internet service provider but under new licence regime it can start mobile calling service by paying additional amount of Rs 1,658 crore.
