VIJAYAWADA: With increasing concern over global warming and environmental destruction, the denizens of Vijayawada, especially women, are increasingly getting attracted to greenery and rushing to nurseries to bring their favourite plants home.
One can see most of the houses having two or more plants of whatever kind. Be it a flowering plant or a fruitbearing plant or croton for giving the interior a lavish look as plantloving people prefer to decorate their homes with plants and flowers. The growing number of nurseries and more and more people taking to horticulture proves that the craving for greenery, including medicinal

plants, in our `concrete jungles', is only on the rise for the leaves of a tree, branch and stems, not to speak of flowers, not only pleases the eye but also soothes the mind. Unfortunately, a good number of small houses or apartment complexes are so built that they leave no space for huge trees to grow or at least verandahs where flower pots can be placed. Thus has germinated the idea of indoor and rooftop gardening.

People can carry their plants home, put them in rectangular or square shaped frames filled with mud which helps plants grow on the terrace.

Rooftop gardens provide better access to private outdoor green space at work and home in an urban environment, improve the quality of air, provide habitat for small birds, increase cultural diversity and also help in providing employment to workers.

The bonsai is a wonderful gift to plantlovers. You can pluck a mango from a tree that is at your height and buried in a pot. Amazingly, the fruit grows into the normal size of any mango and tastes the same. And, it requires no extra care. "Trimming is all you need to do to keep the plant in shape and consistent,'' says Satya of

Medicinal plants such as Akala Karra, Addasara, Saraswati, Neelaveni, Insulin and Rodapatri can be grown in pots.

N Lakshmi, an apartmentdweller in Moghulrajpuram, says the idea of bonsai and rooftop gardens has excited her and driven her to the nursery.

Pets and plants go hand in hand to make the environment healthy and friendly, and enhance mental peace, says another plantlover, Sridevi of Patamata.
