BHUBANESWAR: In a daring heist, six bike- borne miscreants looted Rs 10 lakh from a staffer of a private bank, going in a car, at gunpoint from near Kuakhai bridge along the NH-5 on Monday afternoon. While the incident took place right in the middle of bustling traffic, the bank staffer and driver were not escorted by police though it has been made mandatory in view of such robberies. Mancheswar Police said a collection agent of Axis Bank’s Bomikhal Branch was carrying the cash from Aditya Motors, located close to Nakhara Square. The collection agent was being driven in a Tata Indica which was intercepted by six youths on three bikes near Hi-Tech Hospital Square. The miscreants broke the windscreen and pointed guns at the bank staffer before snatching the cash bag. Four bikers reportedly sped away towards Pandara while two headed in the direction of Rasulgarh, eyewitnesses told the police. The incident occurred at about 5.30 pm. While the brazen act caught the police off-guard, the bank staff too were at fault, sources said. After a spate of such incidents, Commissionerate Police had asked the banks to use two police personnel along with the PCR van during transfer of cash.“In this case, the bank officials did not inform the local police about the cash transfer nor did they ask for security,” said a police officer. No one has been arrested so far. Police quizzed the bank staffer to ascertain if they gave away information to anyone, by chance, the plan of transferring the cash. Of late, there has been a spurt in such robberies in the City despite heightened security.
