CHENNAI: A supervisor of a private firm lost Rs 15.5 lakh cash, meant for buying a housing plot, kept in a locked car, in front of the Sub-Registrar Office in Sriperumbudur near Chennai on Wednesday.Thieves took to a novel route to decamp the money. They used hitech glass cutting machines to force open a car window. According to the police, Vijayakumar (35), of Katrambakkam, had struck a land deal with some persons in that area for buying a housing plot. Both the parties decided to register the transfer ownership on Wednesday.Vijyakumar, along with his sibling Moorthy, and a few friends went to the Sub-Registrar Office in a car. Towards registration, Vijayakumar had kept money to the tune of Rs 15.5 lakh inside the car.When they reached the Sub-Registrar Office, they parked the car ahead of the office and entered the office after securing all the windshields and doors. After preliminary works pertaining to the transfer of title deed of the land, Vijayakumar came out of the office to make payment and was shocked to find the rear-left window of the car forced open and the money missing.In sequel, Vijayakumar called on his brother and friends and shared the information. Vijayakumar lodged a complaint with the Sriperumbur Police station and a case was registered.Preliminary investigations revealed that the glass window was cut with a glass-cutting machine to gain access into car.The accused could have then opened the front left door to decamp the money, a police official said and added that they were trying to establish whether it was a random hit or a conspired crime. Help of Forensic Wing was sought by the local police to lift fingerprints left by the culprit.
