Salaries of Speaker, Deputy Speaker, ministers and MLAs in Haryana have been hiked, with the state Assembly passing Bills in this regard in Chandigarh on Wednesday.

Salaries of Speaker, Deputy Speaker, ministers and MLAs in Haryana have been hiked, with the state Assembly passing Bills in this regard in Chandigarh on Wednesday.

On the concluding day of the Assembly's brief monsoon session, the Haryana Legislative Assembly Speaker's and Deputy Speaker's Salaries and Allowances (Amendment) Bill, 2013 was passed in the House. Now, salary of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker would be raised from Rs 40,000 per month to Rs 50,000 per month.

The House passed the Haryana Salaries and Allowances Of Ministers (Amendment) Bill, 2013 to enhance the salary of ministers from Rs 40,000 to Rs 50,000 per month. The Haryana Legislative Assembly (Salary, Allowances and Pension of Members) Amendment Bill, 2013 was also passed in the House to enhance salary of MLAs from Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000 per month.

Monthly constituency allowance of each legislator was also hiked from Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000 and telephone allowance from its earlier Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000. Salary of the Leader of Opposition has been hiked from Rs 40,000 per month to Rs 50,000. The decision to hike salaries and allowances was taken keeping in view the rise in the cost of living, the House was informed.

Haryana Assembly has a strength of 90 members. 28 members of the opposition INLD and one member of BJP, Anil Vij, were suspended for the remainder of the session on the opening day for unruly behaviour.

The remaining three BJP legislators did not attend the House in protest and the Bills were passed in absence of opposition members. The House also passed a Bill to increase pensions of ex-MLAs.
