THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Rice at Rs 16 per kilogram and stationery products and vegetables at prices 10-50 per cent less than the market rate. You can save a good amount for the New Year, if you purchase vegetables and stationary from the Supplyco’s Christmas-New Year Metro People’s Bazaar.With a good collection of subsidised products, the bazaar is gaining popularity. Inaugurated by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Sunday, it saw sales of Rs 70,460 on the first day alone. The Christmas-New Year sales is being held at the Putharikandam maidan. However, compared to the People’s Bazaar in the city, the one in Kollam is witnessing more sales. An amount of Rs 1,67,029 was the collection there on Sunday. But, taking a cue from the popularity of Onam bazaar, Supplyco officials feel that the sales would gain momentum once the government employees get their salary by December 23.Five kilograms of rice is available at Rs 16 a kg. All major stationery products are available at around 50 per cent subsidy. Vegetables cost 10-30 per cent less than the market rate. According to A Chandrika, regional manager of Supplyco, “it is not the sales that matter. Making subsidised products available for people during the festival season is more important. The Onam season witnessed sales of ` 76 lakh. Similar sales are expected this time too.”“The bazaar will be open till 9 pm. It is open on Sundays too,” she said. Ajitha, a homemaker from Prasanth Nagar, Ulloor, bought items worth ` 600. “I bought rice at Rs 16. We could save a fair amount of money. I had purchased from the Onam Bazaar too,” said Ajitha, who feels the People’s Bazaar is a good initiative. Apart from the Supplyco products, stalls of KEPCO, Meat Products of India, Coirfed too have been opened at the venue. The fair will be on till December 31.
