New Delhi: A band of artists have carved a piece of sand sculpture on the golden beach of Puri to welcome Greg Chappell and the Indian cricket team, hours after they were manhandled at the airport.

Internationally known sand artiste Sudarshan Pattnaik and his students have erected a 20-feet long cricket bat and a ball bearing a message 'Welcome Chappell and Team India' that has attracted many tourists on the beach.

“I am a cricket fan and what happened on Monday was a sad incident. It should not happen again," Pattnaik, who has been trying to create awareness on various issues through his art, said.

The sculpture was carved out using 15 tonnes of sand and took Patnaik and his team five hours to be complete it.

“This is our way of saying welcome and we wish the Indian team the best. We hope they will repeat their Nagpur performance," Pattnaik, who has won laurels in several international sand art competitions, said.

A few days ago, the team had sculpted olive ridley turtles on the sand here to draw attention on the large number of turtle deaths on the Orissa coast
