New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued contempt notices to Haryana, Arunachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir State Governments for not implementing its directions on high security number plates for vehicles.

The Supreme Court issued notices to other State Governments to file a status report on steps taken by them to bring in high security number plates.

The PIL which was filed by Maninder Jeet Singh Bitta, plea saying number plates of vehicles used in terrorist related and other criminal activities are changed during such activities.

Bitta submitted a proposal that the plates should have unique logos and should be tamper proof. Being tamper-proof will help law enforcement agencies track vehicles involved in crimes.

The Supreme Court also directed all states to implement scheme of tamper-free security plates within eight weeks.
