SC stays proceedings against Shobhaa De for tweeting against Maharashtra government's diktat

Mumbai: In an interim relief for author Shobhaa De, the Supreme Court has stayed stays all proceedings against her by Maharashtra authorities for tweeting against the government's diktat mandating the screening of Marathi films at multiplexes during prime time.

The apex court has stayed all proceedings initiated against her by Maharashtra legislature's principal secretary for eight weeks. The SC has asked the secretary to reply to the court in eight weeks explaining the need for action against De.

Following her tweet slamming Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis government on the issue, a privilege notice was issued against her by Maharashtra legislature.

She had tweeted, "No more pop corn at multiplexes in Mumbai? Dahi misal and vada pav only. To go better with the Marathi movies at prime time."

"Devendra Fadnavis is at it again!!!From beef to movies. This is not the Maharashtra we all love! Nako!Nako! Yeh sab roko!I love Marathi movies. Let me decide when and where to watch them, Devendra Fadnavis. This is nothing but Dadagiri (sic)," she said in another tweet.

Soon after the privilege motion was given, she reacted saying, "Now a privilege motion demanding an apology from me? Come on! I am a proud Maharashtrian and love Marathi films. Always have. Alwaays will!"

Screening of Marathi films during the prime time slots of 6pm to 9pm in multiplexes has been made mandatory by Maharashtra government. "We are in the process of enacting a law to make it mandatory for multiplexes to screen Marathi films during prime time," Culture Minister Vinod Tawde said on Tuesday.
