New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday declined the Narmada Bachao Andolan's (NBA) plea to stop work to raise the height of Sardar Sarovar Dam from 110 m to 121.92 m.
The court gave the order after Additional Solicitor General Gopal Subramanian said that the Prime Minister has constituted a three-member committee, which will by June submit a report on the rehabilitation of families displaced by the dam in Madhya Pradesh.
The Prime Minister will be in a better position to take a decision after getting the report, said Subramanian.
"We hope and expect the Prime Minister will be able to take a decision on or before July 3 and the decision taken shall be placed on record," said a Bench headed by Chief Justice Y K Sabharwal.
The court, which posted the matter for further hearing on July 7, expressed the hope that all the parties concerned would fully cooperate and not cause any obstruction in the work of survey teams constituted by the group.
The NBA petition's said work must be stopped because people displaced by the dam are not being rehabilitated and Gujarat was utilising just 15 per cent of water available for power generation.
