The big day is here. John Hamish Watson is getting married to Mary Elizabeth Morstan in this episode. You know what that means. The best man speech. Sherlock Holmes, as John's best friend, needs all his skills to nail this one. Here are 10 things you can expect from S3E2.
The wedding: The invitations have gone out and the venue is booked. John and Mary's wedding is the highlight of this episode. The planning of the wedding is on and John and Sherlock are on their last adventure as bachelors. She looks lovely in white and it's delightful to see her sometime grimacing, exasperated and amused as she sits through Sherlock's long speech.
The Speech: If you thought you couldn't get enough of Benedict Cumberbatch, this is Cumberbatch at his eloquent best. He uses his Best Man's speech to fondly remember his mad adventures with John over the years, while simultaneously deter a murder from happening at the venue. The awkward, humorous, slightly diffident and entirely heart-warming speech will leave no dry eyes in the room. Watch it to enjoy the dig he takes at Lestrade. "Scotland yard, you've got a theory? Yeah you, you're a detective, broadly speaking..?"
The Stag Night: Only Sherlock Holmes would plan drinks with John at every place they discovered a body together. What follows is a mad, mad night that ends up with the two playing 20 questions - very, very drunk.
The flirt: You have met Sherlock Holmes, the high functioning sociopath, the genius on the side of the angels and the coldly aloof man who manages to rub everyone he meets the wrong way. You will now meet the flirt. And you will love the slightly awkward Sherlock attempting small talk with the bridesmaids.
Mary Morstan: She's a revelation. To slightly twist a borrowed quote - to know Mary, is to love Mary. I loved her in episode 1 of the third season when she cheekily interrupts John in the middle of his proposal to let him know that she's the best thing that happened to him. I love her now as the quietly confident woman who helps John make the transition from a war veteran mourning his best friend to a man looking to settle down with the woman he loves. Mary is persuasive, humorous, goodnatured and most importantly, she perfectly understands what John and Sherlock mean to each other.
The Holmlock shift: The most endearing bit about the wedding episode is Sherlock's childish jealousy at having found out that John Watson has other friends he respects and admires. When Mary asks him in episode one "do you understand anything about human nature" Holmes responds 'Nature...no. Human....no." He proves that he understands human nature better than he thinks he does. His part in John's wedding brings out a new side - one that is kind, charitable, understanding, romantic even, but mostly immensely mature. "When I say you deserve this man, it is the highest compliment of which I'm capable," he says of John, to a roomful of people reaching for tissues.
The big news: Leave it to Mr Holmes to drop a bomb in Mary's lap at the end of the episode. Don't miss this one.
