Show-cause notice to Fortis Hospital

BANGALORE: The High Court on Thursday issued a showcause notice to Fortis Hospital in connection with the death of patient due to alleged negligence of doctors on May 6, 2010, and directed the Health Department to conduct a fresh inquiry based on the Lokayukta report.The petitioner Pankaj Rai’s wife Seema Rai, admitted to Fortis Hospital for kidney transplantation, had died due to alleged negligence of doctors.Hearing the petition, Justice A S Bopanna issued a fresh show-cause notice to the hospital.Following her death, the petitioner had complained to Karnataka Medical Council (KMC) against the hospital.In his complaint, he had alleged that the hospital had transplanted liver and pancreas simultaneously though did not possess licence for transplantation of pancreas.The council had given a clean chit to the hospital.The petitioner later approached the Lokayukta seeking action.The Lokayukta, in its report in May 2011, indicted the hospital stating that it had no licence as required under the Human Organ Transplantation Act.
