COIMBATORE: Only 3.39% of the 50,629 candidates, who had appeared for the State Eligibility Test (SET) for Lectureship have cleared the examination this year.As per the results declared by the Bharathiar University on Thursday, the number of successful candidates is a mere 1,396.The university conducted the State Eligibility Test for Lectureship with the approval of the University Grants Commission (UGC), on August 14. The test was conducted in 10 main centres and 53 sub-centres in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry and consisted of three papers.Out of the 50,629 candidates, who had applied for the test, only 41,164 appeared.Based on the minimum marks required, 1,396 candidates have passed. Of them, 199 belong to the general category, 799 from Backward/Physically Challenged/Visually Challenged categories and 398 from the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. The pass percentage is 3.39%. Out of the 27 subjects, 673 candidates cleared Tamil, 213 English and 194 Management.However, none cleared Chemical Sciences, Geography, Hindi, Library and Information Sciences, Mathematical Sciences and Physical Sciences papers.Candidates have performed well in Bio-Technology, Economics, Physical Education, Journalism and Mass Communication and the pass percentage in these subjects is better than the previous exams.Bharathiar University Vice Chancellor Swaminathan said, “The University conducted the SET exam in 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2008, but the pass percentage was only 0.68, 0.85, 2.20 and 2.19 respectively. In the present SET examination, the pass percentage is 3.39, which is a laudable improvement.”
