In a disturbing incident from Guwahati, Assam, a man is under investigation after it was revealed that he kept his deceased mother’s body in their home for three months without performing her last rites. The case has drawn widespread attention and shock.
According to reports, 40-year-old Jaideep Dev failed to inform neighbours about his mother, Purnima Dev’s death, which occurred three months ago. Instead, he continued to bring food to her as if she were still alive, leading to growing concerns among neighbours. The situation escalated when they noticed that Purnima had not been seen for an extended period, and the house had become increasingly neglected, with garbage piling up outside. Concerned for her well-being, they questioned Jaideep about his mother.
His response was chilling; he mentioned that his mother had passed away but refused to clean the house until he found someone to assist him. Alarmed by his comments, neighbours contacted the police. When authorities arrived at the house in Jyotikuchi neighborhood, they were shocked to find a skeleton lying on the bed, confirmed to be that of Purnima Dev. Investigations revealed that Purnima had lived a secluded life with her son since the death of her husband, a retired railway officer.
Neighbours described Jaideep as having mental health issues, and it became apparent he had confined his mother to their home for many years, relying solely on her pension as their income. While he frequently visited the bank to withdraw money, neighbours expressed skepticism about his mental state, questioning how he could interact with the outside world yet keep his mother’s death a secret.
One neighbour, Joysingh, expressed disbelief over Jaideep’s claim that he had no knowledge of the need for last rites, highlighting the confusion surrounding his behaviour. During police searches, items related to rituals, such as a picture of Lord Shiva, offerings of dub grass, and a lamp, were found alongside the skeleton. Jaideep reportedly told officers he had been chanting the mantra “Om Namah Shivaya” daily, perhaps as a misguided belief that it would somehow bring his mother back to life.
