New Delhi: On one hand where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is celebrating its astounding success in the Lok Sabha elections, the Congress is reeling under the shock. While all leaders have taken moral responsibility for the debacle, there are questions being raised if party President Sonia Gandhi and Vice President Rahul Gandhi will tender their resignations.
All eyes are on the crucial meeting of the Congress to be held on Monday, where according to sources, both Sonia and Rahul may offer to resign.
However, the party leaders have rubbished such rumours. "It is only a speculation," Digvijaya Singh said. Others also added that such a decision will not be accepted by the party. "Even if they offer to quit, no one in the party is going to accept this," party leader Shakeel Ahmed said.
Though no one in the party is challenging the top leadership they accept that their grassroot organisation and communication strategy needs an overhaul. "We failed to communicate to people our achievement and rebut charges made against us," Shakeel Ahmed said.
The few leaders who have managed to win their seats in the polls, are now looking forward to be in the opposition. "Congress can never be decimated. We are going to play the role of a constructive opposition and make sure the government does not deviate from the path of secularism and development," Veerappa Moily said.
The Congress though, is clearly shaken after its worst ever performance with almost all union ministers losing their seats. While the party does a post mortem of what went horribly wrong, the immediate headache would be to prevent another embarrassing defeat in the Assembly polls in four states later in the year.
