BELLARY: A verbal altercation ensued between Opposition leader Siddaramaiah and supporters of Independent candidate B Sriramulu on Sunday afternoon when the latter tried to stop him from campaigning at Allipur village on the outskirts of Bellary city.Hundreds of supporters of Sriramulu, led by Bellary City Corporation member T Yallappa, tried to stop Siddaramaiah from entering the village immediately after Sriramulu left it after seeking votes, claiming it to be the bastion of Sriramulu. They also raised slogans against Siddaramaiah.Irked by the development, Siddaramaiah insisted on campaigning while criticising their action. As the situation was getting tense, the Deputy Commissioner and the SP rushed to the spot and arrested Yallappa and another man.Later speaking to media persons, Siddaramaiah condemned the incident as anti-democratic, and said he was not the one to be deterred by such threats. “It is highly condemnable. How can they stop anyone from campaigning. If this is the situation now, what will happen if Sriramulu wins this election,” he said, and added that the party would lodge a complaint with the police.
