TIRUCHY: With the daughter of the Soil set to land in her hometown of Srirangam on Sunday, locals  feel that the Chief Minister may come out with announcements on several world class facilities that will put the Shrine town on par with other important pilgrim centres like Tirupathi, in terms of infrastructure and civic facilities.Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa will make a three-day whirlwind tour of her constituency here. Residents are hopeful that a solution would be found to most of their problems and the island town will witness rapid development soon. The major problems waiting for solution include the discharge of sewage into the Cauvery and traffic congestion. People have also been demanding an additional railway bridge to connect the island town with the mainland. Farmers, who are worried about the depleting water table near the Cauvery, want the indiscriminate sand quarrying to be stopped. They also want the Kattalai High Level Canal, between Mayanur and Thayanur, to be modernised, so that irrigation will be assured throughout the year. Besides, they want the setting up of industries, which can utilise banana produced by them. Improvement of facilities in the government hospital including forming a blood bank, appointing additional doctors, a check dam over the river Coleroon are the other long pending demands of the people here. The island town between the Cauvery and Coleroon Rivers has been languishing without major development, despite its stature as a major pilgrimage hub in eastern Tamil Nadu. The people are hopeful that the road network in the interior areas would be improved as the town draws tourists right through the year. The extended areas of the town lack basic amenities like roads, drainage facilities and lights. Residents also complain of lack of parking space for tourist vehicles. People are hopeful that they would get an opportunity to directly air their grievances and demands to the CM.
