GANGAVATHI: “There is an urgent need in Karnataka for another freedom movement -freedom from corruption and the influence of Western civilisation and culture,” said president of 78th Akhil Bharat Kannada Sahitya Sammelan Dr C P Krishnakumar.Delivering his speech from Gandugali Kumararama Vedike at Dasohamurthy Channabasavaswamy Mahamantapa in Gangavathi on Friday, Dr CPK said though there were controversies, the movement launched by Anna Hazare was a welcome sign. Similarly, Kannadigas must come out of their apathy towards their language, culture and heritage and work with diligence to achieve success, he said, and called upon Kannadigas to create an atmosphere wherein, those who would not learn Kannada and could not adjust themselves with Kannadigas, should not stay in Karnataka.Describing globalisation, liberalisation and privatisation as three banes of the society, he regretted that the Kannadigas had been committing cultural ‘harakiri’ under the influence of  these banes.Claiming that Kannadigas were in the middle of a battlefield as they had become a minority in their own state, Dr CPK felt that the government must make it mandatory to give employment only to those who studied in Kannada and handle anti-Kannada groups like MES.At the same time, the state must focus on overall development of border areas, he added. Regretting that the people had not understood the difference between English as a language and as a medium of instruction, he said the children should be allowed to learn English as a language and study core subjects in Kannada medium.Linguists, psychologists and the educationists had insisted that core subjects should be taught only in the mother tongue, he said.
