KOCHI: The stage is all set for the launch of the second edition of the mass literacy campaign across the state. Around one and a half lakh people are expected to take part in the examination which will be conducted soon. The officials of the Kerala State Literacy Mission said that they had completed all procedures required to conduct the examination. The programme was included in the UDF government’s 100-day programme. “Kerala has not witnessed any major literacy drives after the one which was undertaken by the National Literacy Mission in 1998. Though the previous drive had covered a major chunk of the illiterate population, a few were left behind. Hence the state government has decided to undertake a major drive titled ‘Akshara Laksham’,” said R Sasi Kumar, joint-director, Kerala Literacy Mission. ‘Primar’, a teaching booklet prepared by the Literacy Mission has been distributed across the state. The literacy missions in all districts have prepared the candidates for the examination,” he said. Though the project was included in the UDF government’s 100-day programme and was inaugurated quite a while ago, it could not be implemented so far as it involved elaborate procedures. He also said that the major hurdle they had to overcome was  the increasing number of dropouts. “There are many who would attend the classes. But owing to many reasons, they would flunk the classes,” Sasi Kumar said. The date for the examination would be announced soon. The examination will be held in different centres across the state on the same day. The activities of Askhara Lokam begin at the grassroots level. As the first step, three preraks are appointed in each panchayat to find out the people who are yet to take the examination. “The preraks will find and bring them under the continuing education centres in panchayats,” said L M Subaida, assistant district coordinator, Ernakulam. She added that the model continuing centres in the district have also lent their cooperation for the major literacy campaign.
