CHENNAI: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Tuesday told the State Assembly that her government would take immediate steps to notify the final verdict of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal in the Union Gazette so that it would be binding on Karnataka government to implement the order.“To enforce the final verdict of the Cauvery Tribunal, it has to be notified in the Gazette of the Central government. This will become binding on the Karnataka government to implement the verdict. But the previous minority DMK government failed to take any such step. However, this government will take immediate steps to notify the verdict in the Union Gazette,” the Chief Minister said, intervening in the discussion on the motion of thanks to the Governor’s address. Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have been locked in a battle over the decades-long dispute on sharing of Cauvery waters, an emotive issue in both states. The final verdict of the Cauvery Tribunal was given on February 5, 2007. According to the order, Karnataka should release 192 tmcft (thousand million cubic feet) of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu per annum. Of this, 10 tmcft would go for environmental purposes and 7 tmcft should be released to Puducherry. In effect, Tamil Nadu would get 175 tmcft.Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala appealed to the Tribunal against the final award. Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have filed petitions before the Supreme Court also.  As all these petitions are pending disposal now, the interim award of the Tribunal (205 tmcft to Tamil Nadu) is in force till now.
