Garike Grass, aka, Bermuda Grass can be made into a healthy drink called Garike Kashaya.

Bermuda grass, also known as couch grass is native to Europe, Africa, Australia and many parts of Asia. It is also known as Dhoob, durva grass, dubo, dog grass, Bahama grass, crabgrass, devil’s grass and other names across the globe. Despite its name, it is not native to Bermuda. In India, it sprouts in the rainy season and is a panacea for many diseases. Apart from being used in puja rituals, it has great health benefits as well.

Garike Grass, aka, Bermuda Grass can be made into a healthy drink called Garike Kashaya. But what is Kashaya? Kashaya is a healthy and refreshing Ayurvedic drink made by combining dry and aromatic spices. It is a great concoction, especially for those who suffer from a common cold or sore throat and boosts the immunity to fight against the virus. Now, imagine this healthy drink getting a dose of Garike. Fighting off the cold one catches during seasonal changes is excellent.

Shruti Taragodu, a skilled artist from Sirsi, Karnataka gave a step-by-step recipe to make this drink. To make Garike Kashaya, you will need Garike grass, coriander seeds, ginger, black pepper, jaggery, cumin seeds and water.

Here is a step-by-step process-

  • Take four whole garike grown around the house and add them to the boiling water.
  • As soon as the colour changes a little, add the coriander seeds and ginger (powder). Keep the order in mind.
  • Give it a quick stir and add the cumin seeds, followed by black pepper powder.
  • Mix it up and then add jaggery powder and stir it properly to make sure it gets incorporated into the liquid properly.

Pour it into a cup or a glass and then squeeze in a few drops of lemon juice. Your Kashaya is finally ready. In many households of Malenadu, people drink this as an alternative to tea. The spices in the tea are known to help in recovery from common allergies and diseases.
