A nine-year-old girl was raped and murdered by a 29-year-old man at Janata Colony in Tavarekere on the outskirts of the city on Wednesday evening, the police said.
Raged over the incident, the public thrashed the accused black and blue.
The victim has been identified as Heena Kausar, a Class 3 student, while the accused Saleem, is a tailor. Kausar was the daughter of Nagina, who works in an incense stick manufacturing unit.
Police said the victim’s mother was preparing dinner, while Saleem, who resided in the neigbouring house, asked Kausar to bring beedis for him.
When she went to his house, Saleem allegedly raped and murdered her.
The neighbours who learnt of the incident caught Saleem and hit him. Later, he was handed over to the police.
Meanwhile, the public kept the victim’s body on Tavarekere main road and stopped vehicle movement for about ten minutes.
However, the police convinced them of taking severe action against the accused and shifted the body to a hospital.
The Tavarekere police have registered a case in this connection and are further investigating.
